Windows Server 2012 on AWS 0 Comments

Windows Server 2012 on AWS

A few days ago Amazon announced that you can now provision Microsoft Server 20012  on their flagship cloud computing platform EC2.

This is great news for customers deploying Windows based cloud servers. Windows Server 20012 is only a few months old and has some great features. The ability to run it on Amazon Web Services (AWS) so early is a great opportunity.

Here are some of the key features of Microsoft Windows Server 2012:

  • Hyper-V 3.0 – Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V 3.0 has a slew of new features. Many of which make it a true enterprise-class hypervisor platform. Some of these new features include storage live migration, concurrent live migration, continuous availability, and network virtualization. Hyper-V 3.0 is a huge step in the right direction for Microsoft and I am very excited to start deploying it.
  • User Interface – Server 2012 has been redesigned with a major emphasis on ease of management. Unless installed as server core mode, 2012 uses the Metro UI theme like Windows 8.
  • Task Manager – Like Windows 8 the Windows Server 2012 Task Manager has some new features such as resource usage light-ups, process type grouping, friendly names for background processes, and top-level grouping windows by app. For IT pros that use 3rd party tools these features may not seem that big, but for the times when you do not have your tools the new task manager can be a great help.
  • IP Address Management (IPAM) –Windows Server 2012 introduces IP address management (IPAM) feature – a central framework for monitoring and managing the IP address space and the associated infrastructure servers.
  • Active Directory Domain Services – Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) in Windows Server 2012 include new features that make it simpler and faster to deploy domain controllers (both on-premises and in the cloud), more flexible and easier to both audit and authorize access to files, and easier to perform administrative tasks at scale, either locally or remotely, through consistent graphical and scripted management experiences.
  • Remote Desktop Service – The Remote Desktop Services server role in Windows Server 2012 provides technologies that enable users to connect to virtual desktops, RemoteApp programs, and session-based desktops. With Remote Desktop Services, users can access remote connections from within a corporate network or from the Internet
